Pakistan has received 73% more rain than usual this monsoon season, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab. Officials say this rise in rainfall is a sign of changing climate and growing risk of natural disasters.
PDMA Punjab Director General Irfan Ali Kathiya said on Tuesday that the heavy rains have caused 165 deaths in Punjab so far. Most of the victims died due to lightning, electrocution, or drowning.
He warned that 4 to 5 more rain spells are expected soon, and emergency plans are already in place. “The Punjab government will support the families of those who died as per policy,” he added.
Due to the heavy rainfall, the risk of urban flooding has gone up in many areas, including Lahore. Local authorities have been told to stay alert.
The public has also been asked to stay safe during rain, especially by avoiding flood-prone and low-lying areas.
